Ritual of Naming for DawenWalker

Performed July 15, 1999

Smudge all who enter circle area, with the words “May the blessings of the spirits, both small and mighty, be upon you.” Take smudge/incense to East. (East Greeter) Greetings Wolf, spirit keeper of the East, mother of all, bringer of life, we welcome you. (Lift incense/sage to sky, take to South.) (South Greeter) Greetings Badger, spirit keeper of the South, our sister, bringer of love and family, we welcome you (Lift incense/sage to sky, take to West.)

(West Greeter) Greetings Bear, spirit keeper of the West, great father, bringer of wisdom, we welcome you (Lift incense/sage to sky, take to North.)

(North Greeter) Greetings, Mountain Lion, spirit keeper of the North, our brother, bringer of strength, we welcome you. (Lift incense/sage to sky, take to center.)

Mighty Eagle, keeper of the Spirit World, Great Mole, keeper of the Under World, we invite your presence here to witness this renaming rite of our sister. We ask your blessings upon all those here. (Lift incense/sage to sky, down to earth, and return to altar.)

We are here in this sacred space to join with our sister as she takes a new name she will use among us. Will you come forward, Mary Jane, and tell us the name you have chosen, and why? (Mary Jane steps forward and speaks.)

A new name is one that connects us to our spiritual path and seeking. In choosing it, we announce it to the spirits and divine ones that they may know us and recognize that we seek their wisdom and teachings as we move ahead in our life walk. We will, now, introduce DawenWalker to the world and spirits around us all. In this ceremony, I draw upon the words of the Omaha nation, and their ritual which announces a new living being, called “The Introduction to the Cosmos of the Newborn.” Since DawenWalker, in her taking of this name, is essentially reborn in the eyes of the world, we thought it a fitting selection. This announcement is a metaphor for the life journey and respects the natural world and the might of nature.

Hear now, Mother Wolf, Sister Badger, Father Bear, Brother Mountain Lion, Mighty Eagle, and Great Mole!

Ho! Sun, Moon, Stars, all ye that move in the heavens, I bid you hear me! Into your midst has come one who seeks to follow a new life. Make DawenWalker’s path smooth, that she may reach the brow of the first hill.

Ho! Winds, Clouds, Rain, Mist, all ye that move in the air, I bid you hear me!

Into your midst has come one who seeks to follow a new life. Make DawenWalker’s path smooth, that she may reach the brow of the second hill.

Ho! Hills, Valleys, Rivers, Lakes, Trees, Grasses, all ye of earth, I bid you hear me! Into your midst has come one who seeks to follow a new life. Make DawenWalker’s path smooth, that she may reach the brow of the third hill.

Ho! Birds, great and small, that fly in the air, Ho! Animals, great and small, that dwell in the forest, Ho! Insects that creep among the grasses and burrow in the ground, I bid you hear me!

Into your midst has come one who seeks to follow a new life. Make DawenWalker’s path smooth, that she may reach the brow of the fourth hill.

Ho! All of the heavens, air and the earth, I bid you hear me! Into your midst has come one who seeks to follow a new life. Make DawenWalker’s path smooth, then shall she travel beyond the four hills.

I ask all of you now to greet DawenWalker and welcome her to our circle, with a cry of Ho! Dawen Walker! Ho! DawenWalker! (Three times)

Please join me in song/chant “Oh, Great Spirit, Earth, Sun, Sky and Sea, you’re inside, and all around me.” (Seven times)

It is our belief that the Earth itself is a mighty circle, and all upon it are a part of the circle of life. We do not presume to dismiss the spirit keepers, but thank them for witnessing our ceremony, and for the gifts of life, love, wisdom and strength which they have given us. Thus, we do not release the circle, but instead know that where ever we gather in the name of the Spirits of Life is a sacred space for that time. In closing, we bid you walk the earth gently, and go in peace.
