Basic Esbat Rite

from Raymond Buckland
MoonPath CUUPS

(Priest and Priestess enter Circle and stand before altar facing
East. Priest rings bell three times. )

HPS: "Be it known the Temple is about to be erected; the Circle
is about to be cast. Let those who desire attendance gather in
the east and await the summons. Let none be here but of their
own free will."

(HP and HPS each take an altar candle and move around the Circle
deosil to light the Quarter candles beginning in the East.)

HPS: "Here do I bring light and air in at the East, to
illuminate our temple and bring it the breath of life."

HP: "Here do I bring light and fire in at the South, to
illuminate our temple and bring it warmth."

HPS: "Here do I bring light and water in at the West, to
illuminate our temple and wash it clean."

HP: "Here do I bring light and earth in at the North, to
illuminate our temple and to build it in strength."

(HPS casts the Circle with athame moving deosil. She returns to
altar and HP rings bell three times. )

(HP places point of athame in salt)

HP: "As Salt is Life, let it purify us in all ways we may use
it. Let it cleanse our bodies and spirits as we dedicate
ourselves in these rites to the glory of the Goddess and the
God."

(HPS places three portions of salt in the water with her athame.)

HPS: "Let the Sacred Salt drive out any impurities in this
Water, that we may use it throughout these rites."

(HP takes up censer. HPS takes up salt water. He follows her
around the Circle.)

(HP takes up the Oil and anoints HPS, outlining Celtic Cross on
forehead.)

HP: "I consecrate thee in the names of the Goddess and the God,
bidding you welcome to this our Circle."

(They salute and HPS anoints HP with the same words and Celtic
Cross.)

(HP and HPS move together to admit the Coveners. HP make two
cuts across the Circle with his athame. As the Coveners come in
one by one, they are anointed with oil, males by HPS, females by
HP.)

HP: "I consecrate thee in the names of the Goddess and the God,
bidding you welcome to this our Circle. Merry Meet."

( When last has been admitted, HP closes Circle with athame. HPS
sprinkles a little oil. HP draws a pentagram. Bell is rung
three times.)

HPS: "May you all be here in peace and love. We bid you
welcome. Let now the Quarters be saluted and the Gods invited."

(With athame raised, covener draws invoking pentagram, starting
from the top; gives the salute and kisses blade.)

East: "All hail the element of Air; Spirits of the East.
Please join us and watch over our Circle."

South: "All hail the element of Fire, Spirits of the South.
Please join us and watch over our Circle."

West: "All hail the element of Water, Spirits of the West.
Please join us and watch over our Circle."

North: "All hail the element of Earth, Spirits of the North.
Please join us and watch over our Circle."

(HP pours a small amount of wine for everyone. He pours a little
into the libation dish. All salute the Gods. The bell is rung
three times.)

HPS: "Now are we here and is the Temple erected. Let none leave
but with good reason, till the Temple is cleared. So mote it be."

ESBAT RITE

HPS: "Once more we meet together, one with another, to share our
joy of life and to reaffirm our feelings for the Gods."

HP: "The Lord and Lady have been good to us. It is meet that
we thank them for all that we have. They also know that we have
needs and they listen to us when we call upon them."

HPS: "Then let us join together to thank the Goddess and the God
for those favors they have bestowed upon us. And let us also ask
of them that which we feel we need; remembering always that the
gods help only those who help themselves."

(Each person will mention one thing for which he is grateful
saying; "I thank the Lord and Lady for........." Each person
will then mention a need which will be written down. Other
coveners will then offer assistance or ideas if possible.)

HPS: "The Lady and Lord have heard your needs and will answer in
time. At home you must sleep with your need under your pillow
for the next week. You must also act in accord by doing
everything possible to help yourself."

HP: "An it harm none, do what thou wilt. Thus runs the Wiccan
Rede. Remember it well. Whatever you desire; whatever you would
ask of the Gods; whatever you would do; be assured that it will
harm no one - not even yourself. And remember that as you give,
so it shall return threefold.  Give of yourself - your love;
your life - and you will be thrice rewarded. But send forth harm
and that too will return thrice over."

(Music or Chanting may be done)

HPS: "Beauty and Strength are in the Lady and the Lord both.
Patience and Love; Wisdom and Knowledge."

CAKES AND ALE

(All goblets are filled by HP, including libation dish)

HPS: "Now is the time for us to give thanks to the Gods for all
that sustains us. May we ever be aware of all that we owe the
Gods."

(HP takes up plate of cakes. HPS touches each with athame and
puts one in the libation dish.)

HPS: "This food is the blessing of the Gods to our bodies. Let
us partake of it freely. And as we share, let us remember always
to see to it that aught that we have we share with those who have
nothing."

(All eat)

(The HP places his athame in the HPS goblet)

HP: "In like fashion may male join with female for the happiness
of both."

HPS: "Let the fruits of union promote life. Let all be fruitful
and let wealth be spread throughout the lands."

(All drink)

HP: "As we enjoy these gifts of the Gods, let us remember that
without the Gods we would have nothing."

HPS: "Eat and drink and be happy. Share and give thanks. So
mote it be."

(Music may be played)

OPENING THE CIRCLE

HPS: "We came together in love and friendship; let us part the
same way. Let us spread the love we have known in this Circle
outward to all; sharing it with those we meet."

(All raise athames)

HP: "We thank the Spirits for guarding our Circle.

Spirits of the East, hail and farewell,
We give you thanks for your presence here.
Stay if you will, go if you must.
      Go in peace."

Spirits of the South, hail and farewell,
We give you thanks for your presence here.
Stay if you will, go if you must.
      Go in peace."

Spirits of the West, hail and farewell,
We give you thanks for your presence here.
Stay if you will, go if you must.
      Go in peace."

Spirits of the North, hail and farewell,
We give you thanks for your presence here.
Stay if you will, go if you must.
      Go in peace."

HPS: Lady and Lord, our thanks to you for sharing this time
together. Our thanks for watching over us; guarding and guiding
us in all things. Love is the Law and Love is the Bond.

The Circle is open, but unbroken.

Merry meet, Merry part, and Merry Meet again.

So Mote it Be."

All: "So Mote it Be."

(Everyone in invited to hug one another.)
