A good preparation is to reread Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream, or to rent the video from Blockbuster. Where to the faeries live? At the corner of your eye. You may notice stirrings just outside of your field of vision. If you turn quickly enough, you just might see one. Who I might invite from the directions? Air - East: Tree Elf A creature of dreams and magic. A race of light beige color, often wearing green. Into herbs and healing Fire - South: Pixies Usually of the female sex, bearing two silvery wings (sometimes four). They fly like humming birds and dance with the dragon flies. Hold very still and you might catch a glimpse of magic at work. Water - West: Mushroom Fairies Living in mushroom groves and gardens. Always two-wings, never four. Not as playful as the pixies. More studious and inclined towards reading. Earth - North: Woodland Gnomes 6 inches tall. Quick, strong and smart. A helper to humans. Sometimes ride on the backs of foxes, fly with a hawk, or even ride a frog. Trolls Four feet high, mean and stupid. Some live under bridges. (Not very pleasant. Let's not invite them.) Goblins One foot high, hairy and dress in black. They dig up graves and scatter bones. (Quite disgusting. Let's not invite them either.) And then there is the Faery Queen, Mab, or, as she is sometimes called, Titania. She travels with her faeries in attendance, and she is a Lady of some Passion: "Out of this wood do not desire to go: Thou shalt remain here, whether thou wilt or no. I am a spirit of no common rate; The summer still doth tend upon my state; And I do love thee: therefore, go with me; I'll give thee fairies to attend on thee, And they shall fetch thee jewels from the deep, And sing while thou on pressed flowers dost sleep; And I will purge thy mortal grossness so That thou shalt like an airy spirit go." Oberon is her Consort and King of the Faeries. He is a nature deity. His arguments with Titania can sometimes cause disruptions in weather. He is said to have come from the furthest steep of India. He is not above plotting with Puck, the trickster, to make mischief for his wife. This Puck is a representative of the Trickster figure, which appears in most folklores. Be gone any of you Trolls or Goblins that might be about. This is not your time or place. Mab, Queen of the Fairies, please grace us with your presence. Come join us and be in our midst with troops and solitaires of your fairy court. Oberon, King of the Fairies and Consort to Mab, please grace us with your presence. Puck, trickster that you are, if you choose to come along with your King and Queen, mind to your manners and do not make mischief for us. Magickal Workings: Summer is the season of the Faeries and a time to be a little crazy, or at least silly. Conjure up some workings that will fit the moment. June brings with it the Faery Moon. Dream of something light. The harvest times are still far away. Dismissals: Mab, Queen of the Fairies, thank you for your presence here. Best wishes to you and your fairy court. Stay if you will, go if you must, go in peace. Oberon, King of the Fairies and Consort to Mab, thank you for your presence here. Stay if you will, go if you must, go in peace.
