Moonday – Welcome to Ostara 2010 at the Unitarian Church of Fort Lauderdale. How grateful we all
should be to have a place to practice our path without judgment or shame. My gratitude extends beyond
this time and place to all those that have paved the path of freedom of religion for us.
My name is Moonday and this is my High Priest, Addakar.

Moonday – Tonight we celebrate Ostara in a more fanciful fashion: using pop-culture and chaos magick
to bring you on a journey.

Addakar – Ostara represents spring, rejuvenation, growth, on the wheel it represents the direction of East.
Looking at the Wheel, we also see The Life Cycle, the seasons and agricultural cycles mirrored in the period
of a year through which we are all journeying.

At Yule we celebrate Birth and rebirth, Imbolc we celebrate childhood, Ostara is that ever-confusing time
of our lives, puberty, Beltane, budding young adulthood, Litha prime adulthood, Lamas, older adulthood,
Mabon, aging, and Samhain death.

Moonday: Mythologically, the God (the Sun – the life giver) eternally dies and is reborn every year with
the promise of life. The Goddess (The Earth– the life holder) nurtures and delivers the gifts of life to us
continually. The two move in an eternal dance, and it is that dance that keeps the Wheel turning.

Addakar: Today is Ostara, the “Vernal Equinox marks the mid-point of the Waxing Year, the nights and days
are balanced once again; the time when Persephone, was believed to have returned from the Underworld where
she had ruled throughout the Winter. The spark of light, born at Winter Solstice has reached maturity,
and from here onwards, the days progressively grow longer than the nights. Western culture proclaims this as
the first day of Spring.” (http://www.helium.com/items/878149-ostara-spring-equinox)

Addakar & Moonday: Hail Ostara!

Moonday:

The Lewis Carroll books, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, represent the growth
into puberty and adulthood. Alice's adventures are just that, the journey from childhood to adulthood. She experiences
numerous new and sometimes more adult like situations in which adaptability is absolutely necessary for success.
She shows marked progress throughout the course of the books; in the beginning, she can barely maintain enough
composure to keep herself from crying. By the end of the novels, she is self-possessed and able to hold her own
against the most baffling Wonderland logic. Today, we will compare the story of Persephone as translated loosely
through the lessons learned by Alice, in Wonderland.

Addakar & Moonday:

Let the rite begin!

Moonday:

Cheshire Cat, will you cleanse the circle with sage… everyone breath the perfumed essence of this transformative herb.
Close your eyes for a moment and let go of the mundane, let go of ego, let go of anxiety, transform, transmute, remember,
reclaim … (Shaper circles once inside with the sage) (Light drumming)

Addakar:

Duchess, will you seal the circle with the sword of enlightenment? As the circle is sealed, see the cone of power begin
to build above and below, to the north, south, east, and west, like a giant magickal egg encircling us, pulsating,
morphing, protecting… (Flower circles once inside with the sword) (Light drumming)

Moonday:

We are now between the worlds, where the mysteries of old are taught, where we maintain reverence, commune with
the elements, feel expansion of self, connectedness with thy brothers and sisters in every direction. How blessed we are…

Addakar:

Let the quarters be called starting in the EAST, all face EAST! (light drumming as the quarter cards circle once,
skipping and chanting welcome powers of the east, welcome powers of the east, welcome powers of the east, welcome powers
of the east…

Moonday:

Tonight we welcome powers of the East with Spades, representing Air with swords. Clarity, focus, knowledge be mine!
Hail Spades!

Addakar:

All face South! (light drumming as the quarter cards circle once, skipping and chanting welcome powers of the south,
welcome powers of the south, welcome powers of the south, welcome powers of the south…

Moonday:

Tonight we welcome powers of the South with Clubs, representing Fire. Transmutation, transformation, change, be mine!
Hail Clubs!

Addakar:

All face West! (light drumming as the quarter cards circle once, skipping and chanting welcome powers of the west,
welcome powers of the west, welcome powers of the west, welcome powers of the west…)

Moonday:

Tonight we welcome the powers of the West with Hearts, representing Water. Compassion, love, ecstasy, be mine!
Hail Hearts!

Addakar:

All face North! (light drumming as the quarter cards circle once, skipping and chanting welcome powers of the north,
welcome powers of the north, welcome powers of the north, welcome powers of the north…)

Moonday:

Tonight we welcome the powers of the North with Diamonds, representing Earth. Solidity, strength, power be mine!
Hail Diamonds!

Moonday:

Now let us welcome in the god and goddess…

Addakar:

Oh great God on this Ostara night, bring to us knowledge and reveal all obstacles to our journey on the cycle of life.
Blessed Be!

Moonday:

Oh great Goddess on this Ostara night, bring to us the fruits of spring and all its splendor. Blessed Be!

Addakar & Moonday:

So, the journey begins!

Big Daddy narrates:

Oh Alice, oh Alice where are thou? There she is in all her innocence, chasing the White Rabbit, on the precipice of
adolescence, like spring that has not yet sprung, Alice chases the White Rabbit in search of maturity, seeking,
awakening, like Persephone, she was asleep and now she begins to become a little girl rather than toddler.
See how the White Rabbit, tempts her to wake up, to experience the journey of pubescence. (Mia chases Aphrodite,
never catching her)

PAUSE

Big Daddy:

Look at the Rabbit, the door to awakening is open and little Alice steps through. (The White Rabbit goes through
the door and so does Mia, Mia and Rowen switch roles)

Big Daddy:

Ah little Alice has grown, “The dramatic changes in size hint at the radical changes the body undergoes during
adolescence. The key, is adaptability. Alice's size change also brings about a change in perspective, and she
sees the world from a very different view.” (Rowen chases the White Rabbit a little bit, and then she is side tracked
by the caterpillar)

PAUSE

Big Daddy:

Now, in the woods Alice comes across a Caterpillar sitting on a mushroom. As the Caterpillar smokes the hookah,
he shares valuable life knowledge. As an archetypal sage the Caterpillar, tells her of a valuable tool: the two
sides of the mushroom, which can make Alice grow larger and smaller as she wishes.

Symbolically, this is the knowledge that Alice needs to begin interacting with all levels of society, regardless
of her age. Like the cultural Shaman or Persephone emerging from the underworld, she must develop her own personal
ego, finding the strength to hold her own against the most baffling Wonderland logic.

PAUSE

Now deeper into the woods or shall we say the underworld? Alice comes across the Duchess; the Duchess and the Cook
are battling fiercely, and they seem unconcerned about the safety of the baby that the Duchess is nursing.
Alice, no different than Persephone is faced with adult themes to awaken her consciousness. Alice wants to fix things,
stop the yelling, stop the crying, she wants to help the baby, to find a solution on her own, so she grabs the baby
and runs off with the Cheshire Cat. (Rowan and Shaper walk the circle arm in arm softly talking)

PAUSE

Much to Alice’s surprise, the child turns into a pig, so much for that responsibility. (Rowan hands the pig to someone
in the circle, Shaper joins the circle)

PAUSE

Wondering on, Alice joins the Hatter for a Mad Tea Party. The Hatter’s watch has stopped, therefore it’s always
six o’clock, which is teatime. Here she finally learns that all the creatures in Wonderland are just...well...crazy.
Seeing that this party could last forever, Alice spys The Cheshire Cat once more, ducking out of the party only to
find herself in the most craziest predicament of them all.

PAUSE

Alice sees the knaves painting white roses red, to give them to the Red Queen, she joins them in fixing the roses
or the Red Queen will have their heads. (Alice and the knaves present the roses to the Red Queen for inspection)

The Queen is quite displeased as you can see, authoritative, demanding, representing those people and establishments
in our society that can be unfair and cruel……because they can. (Ash chases them around the circle yelling, Off with
Their Heads, all the characters in the ritual, beg for mercy and what is just and right, to the Red Queen, Alice
stands front and center, showing inner strength) (Hard Bang Drumming to stop the scene, bass hard 3x)

PAUSE

Ah mercy is shown and the Red Queen grants everyone pardons. (Everyone shakes hands, much joy is expressed,
everyone fades into the circle) (Joyous drumming)

PAUSE

So, tonight we have seen the physical and emotional modifications that Alice, a very curious, inquisitive young woman
and a good observer, passes through as she matures. She is a modern day Persephone as told through a novel.
In several occasions, Alice does not know who she is as a result of her metamorphosis, her turn of the wheel.
Finally, she gets used to her new, maturing body, representing her adaptation. Today the wheel sits here,
at spring-time, soon enough at Beltaine, Alice will become more mature, more sexual, more conscious and more awake.

Moonday:

So this journey we have taken is not traditional at all, however it’s the same story told over and over again
in every culture and tradition. The cycle of life continues and we are always turning.

Moonday:

Tonight we have shared stories, traditions, now it is time for CAKES and ALE! Hold your hand over your cup
if you would like apple juice instead of mead. Let us wait until everyone has the cakes and ale for the blessings.
(Light drumming)

Moonday:

May you never hunger!

Addakar:

May you never thirst!

Moonday & Addakar:

So say we all!

Moonday & Addakar:

Blessed Be!

Moonday:

I am reminded of the lines in the Charge of the Goddess to begin ending this blessed rite,
“Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.
And you who seek to know Me, know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery:
for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without.
For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am THAT which is attained at the end of desire.”
(from Doreen Valiente)

Addakar:

Tonight you all have a token of appreciation of this journey we have been on, the quest for awakening and knowledge,
let us give thanks to the characters that have taken us between the worlds, we give thanks to the drummers,
thanks to the fire-tender…

Moonday:

As the cone fades and the quarters withdraw, we can be assured of one thing, the circle is open, but unbroken,
may the peace of the goddess be ever in your hearts, merry meet and merry part and merry meet again…

Chantrix Iasis sings:

May the circle be open but unbroken,
may the love of the goddess be ever in your heart,
merry meet and merry part and merry meet again…

May the circle be open but unbroken,
may the love of the goddess be ever in your heart,
merry meet and merry part and merry meet again…

May the circle be open but unbroken,
may the love of the goddess be ever in your heart,
merry meet and merry part and merry meet again…
