The Saging of Max Darkstorm
                                  MoonPathCUUPS, Fort Lauderdale, FL

As we plan January 30th for Max, we note we are at a Dark Moon. When we celebrate
February 20, 2014, the Moon will be Gibbous Waning two nights before the third quarter.

These are our planning notes. The completed Ritual is at
www.MoonPathCUUPS.org/rituals/SagingOfMax.pdf

We plan for a High Priest (HP), High Sear (HS), High Priestess (HPS), and other players.

The Three Aspects of Man are Youth, Warrior, Sage. We are looking to put together some words
for a ceremony for the transition from Warrior to Sage.

HP: The Sage is typically represented as a kind and wise, older father-type figure.
He uses personal knowledge of people and the world to tell stories and offer guidance
that may impress upon his audience a sense of who they are and who they might become.
Thereby he is acting as a mentor. Note the one who is mentored is an independent person
and not a pawn in a personal game. The Sage may occasionally appear as an
absent-minded professor,
due to a predilection for contemplative pursuits.

HS: The wise old man is often seen to be in some way "foreign", that is,
from a different culture, nation, or occasionally, even a different time,
from those he advises. In extreme cases, he may be a liminal being, such as Merlin,
who was only half human.

HP: In medieval chivalric romance and modern fantasy literature, the Sage is often
presented as a wizard. Alternatively, he can be featured as a hermit.

HS: This rite marks the time in life when one can enjoy the fruits of one's labor,
and perhaps be considered an honored elder of his community, passing on knowledge
and wisdom on to others.

HP: Tonight we witness this transition for Magnificent, Manic Max,
Manifesting a Male Machismo of Mayhem.

Pause and examine the passages of your life.

HS: Not everyone becomes "the most interesting man in the world." Discard roles
that no longer make sense. With age, some become sexually invisible. Take back your power.
Only cash can maintain the illusion of youth.

RAISING OF THE CIRCLE

What does a man know of directions? The High Priestess performs this part.

HPS: (Takes the sword from the altar and trace a circle around the Transitioner.
When HPS moves to the East she says:)

"Hail and welcome this night, bright Spirits of the East and the Youth.
Lend to us your power and protection that Max may be given a good transition,
to justly wield and embrace the power of Air. So mote it be!"

ALL: "So mote it be!"

HPS: (advances to the South)
"Hail and welcome this night, fiery Spirits of the South and the Warrior.
Lend to us your power and protection that Max may be given a good transition,
to justly wield and embrace the power of Fire. So mote it be!"

ALL: "So mote it be!"

HPS: (advances to the West)

"Hail and welcome this night, tireless Spirits of the West and the King.
Lend to us your power and protection that Max may be given a good transition,
to justly wield and embrace the power of Water. So mote it be!"

ALL: "So mote it be!"

HPS: (advances to the North)

"Hail and welcome this night, frosty Spirits of the North and the Sage.
Lend to us your power and protection this night, that Max may be given a good transition,
to justly wield and embrace the power of Earth. So mote it be!"

ALL: "So mote it be!"

Invocation of the Gods associated with the Sage

  Possible Gods for a Sage:
    Faunus
    Osiris
    Odin, the All-Father
    Allcarth
    Cronos
    The Horned God
    Father Time
    Obatala
    Brahan
    Bran the Blessed

HP: The Circle is cast!
       The Bell is rung,
       The Candles are lit,
       The Chant is sung.
       The Book is opened,
       The Altar is set,
       The Cauldron is stirred,
       The Group is met.

       We now proclaim to everyone
That this, our Ritual, has begun.

HS: "With every end, there is a beginning.

You have not arrived here by chance.
You have put yourself on this Path long ago.
We shall walk some of it together and rejoice.
We first began in past sorrows, in past lives.
We were of the Wicca,
gazing at the stars, feeling deep unnamed secrets;
touching the Earth in joy and sensing life within;
seeing birth and knowing that it was a miracle,
a Mystery, a joy;
being still in the forest,
being warm in the water...
We are all lights,
and we follow the Path through the God and the Goddess,
by all Their names,
and in growing, we grow in brightness,
following the cycles of Moon and Sun,
and glowing in Divine Radiance.

HP: Look into your dark self. See it for what it is.
Your dark self is a part of you. Deny it no longer.
Accept the darkness and let it join with the light,
that you may be made whole.

HS: You have not even to risk this adventure alone,
For the heroes of all time have gone before you.
The maze is thoroughly known.
You have only to follow the thread of the hero path,
And where you had thought to find an abomination,
You shall find a God.
And where you had thought to slay another,
You shall slay yourself.
Where you had thought to travel outward,
You shall come to the center of your own existence.
And where you had thought to be alone,
You shall be with all the world.

The Charge of the God
(Adapted from Writings by Ray Fagan, Elder of the Woodland Celtic Tradition of Wicca.)

HP: Whenever you have need of my strength and power,
or when my sun reaches a spoke of the great wheel,
then shall you step into a holy place and cry out.

I am the sun and the wind and the sea.
I am the storm and the lightning and the thunder.
I am the stone and the fire and the steel.
I am the blade which can cut men asunder.
I am life, and I am death. I am nature.
Love me and respect me -- or fear me.
The choice is yours.

These are the three great magicks which you shall learn at my hand:
Youth, Warrior, Sage.
For these are the three greatest changes of life;
and what is magick, but the ability to effect change?
The secret of life is that it is incomplete without death.
The secret of death is that it is but a doorway to new beginnings.
The secret of love is that it never dies.

Serve me with strength and gentleness.
Protect mine with courage and mercy.
Worship me with mirth and with reverence.
Sing, dance, make music, and make love,
all in my name, for all acts of love and joy are my rituals.
And remember, if you find not that which you seek within yourself,
you shall never find it without;
for behold, I have been with you from the beginning
and am that which is attained at the end of desire.

THE CHALLENGE:

HS: "You have once made the transition from youth to warrior.
This is the time of life when there is a transformation from the strength of the Warrior
to the wisdom of the Sage".

HP: "Who is the Sage?"

Max: "A Sage is a man who has reached wisdom in his heart, who is called on
to arbitrate disputes, who is called on to soothe the wounds of despair.

HP: "Who else is the Sage?"

Max: "He is the god in his third aspect; he is Zeus, Neptune, the god of unbound power.
He appears at important times to share his wisdom. A Sage’s wishes must be respected,
for the god requires this of the younger generation. Sages enjoy special favors;
their magic is stronger; their spells are faster; their wisdom is deeper.

HS: "Would all the women turn to face outward and guard our circle while
the men will bring Max for his ritual anointing. Would all the males present,
who have previously been elevated to Sage, form an inner circle around Max."

Next, remind Max that there are things to let go of:

	Balance?
	Vision?
	Recall?
	Hearing?
	Continence?
	Slimness?
	Agility?

Next there is an anointing with selected oil, water, or fluids.

Next Max is presented with the Working Tools of the Sage:

    Staff
    Owl
    Cloak
    Wizard Hat
Black Stones (A Walker? not yet!)

Next HP invites Max to stand forth:

HP: Max, now Sage and Elder, you have nothing to hide, nothing to prove, nothing to fear.

HS: May you always have mentees to listen to you.

HP; May you always have minions who do your tedious chores.

Next the women turn around and HP and HS present Max to the four quarters
as Sage and Elder within the Craft.

To the East:

"Bright Spirits of the East and the Youth. We present to you Max Darkstorm, Elder and Sage.
Lend him your power and protection to justly wield and embrace the power of Air. Hail and farewell!"

To the South:

"Fiery Spirits of the South and the Warrior. We present to you Max Darkstorm, Elder and Sage.
Lend him your power and protection to justly wield and embrace the power of Fire. Hail and farewell!"

To the West:

"Tireless Spirits of the West and the King. We present to you Max Darkstorm, Elder and Sage.
Lend to him your power and protection to justly wield and embrace the power of Water. Hail and farewell!"

To the North:

"Frosty Spirits of the North and the Sage. We present to you Max Darkstorm, Elder and Sage.
Lend him your power and protection to justly wield and embrace the power of Earth. Hail and farewell!"
