A Ritual of New Beginnings

UU Church of Ft Lauderdale

     A Ritual of New Beginnings
   Modified from Raymond Buckland
The Moon is at the First Quarter
               9/30/97

(In ritual we "suspend disbelief" as in
a play. Casting a Circle is an enacted
meditation.)

(There is an Inner Garden closed in by
trees behind the Memorial Wall space.
Here is set up a small altar. We collect
in this Inner Garden and prepare
ourselves. Then following the HP/HPS
we step through the trees to the Outer
Garden. At the Wall, we have set up a
larger altar, four torches and a central
fire. Here we will cast our Circle.)

(HP and HPS enter Inner Garden and
stand before altar facing Coveners. A
single candle burns on the alter beside
water, salt, and oil.)

(HP rings bell three times.)

HPS: "Be it known the Temple is about
to be erected; the Circle is about to
be cast. Let those who desire
attendance gather in the Inner Garden
and await the summons. Let none be
here but of their own free will."

HP: "We come in perfect love and
perfect trust. Stand in silent
meditation as you prepare yourselves."

(HP and HPS step into Wall area. They
share a blessing for the coming circle
and then light South, West, North
Torches, leaving the East unlit [for
safety reasons]. Then they return to
the Inner Garden.)

HP: "The God and Goddess await you."

(HP and HPS move deosil to light the
candles held by designated Coveners
beginning with the East.)

EAST: "Here do I bring light and air
of the East, to illuminate our temple
and bring it the breath of life."

SOUTH: "Here do I bring light and fire
of the South, to illuminate our temple
and bring it warmth."

WEST: "Here do I bring light and water
of the West, to illuminate our temple
and wash it clean."

NORTH: "Here do I bring light and
earth of the North, to illuminate our
temple and to build it in strength."

(HPS returns to altar and HP rings bell
three times.)

HP: "As Salt is Life, let it purify us
in all ways we may use it."

(HP places point of athame in salt)

HP: "Let it cleanse our bodies and
spirits as we dedicate ourselves in
these rites to the glory of the God and
the Goddess."

(HPS places three portions of salt in
the water with her athame.)

HPS: "Let the Sacred Salt drive out
any impurities in this Water, that we
may use it throughout these rites."

(HPS hands saltwater to a Covener to
carry.)

(HP takes up the Oil and anoints HPS,
outlining Celtic Cross on forehead.)

HP: "I consecrate thee in the names of
the God and the Goddess, bidding you
welcome to this their Temple."

(They salute and HPS anoints HP with
the same words and Celtic Cross.)

(HP and HPS move together to admit the
Coveners to Wall area. As the Coveners
come in one by one, they are anointed
with oil.)

(The first to enter the Wall area shows
the others where to stand.)

HP/HPS: "I consecrate thee in the names
of the God and Goddess, bidding you
welcome to this their Temple. Step
between the Worlds. Merry Meet."

(Last Covener carries candle from alter
to alter)

(The Moon it its first quarter can be seen
to the West above the Wall.)

(When the last Covener has been
admitted to the Outer Garden, HP lights
the East Torch. HPS sprinkles a little
oil on the earth. HP draws a pentagram.
A Bell is rung three times.)

HPS: "May you all be here in peace and
love. We bid you welcome. Let now the
Quarters be saluted and the Gods
invited."

(HP takes up censer from alter. HPS
takes up saltwater from Covener. He
follows her around the Circle.)

HPS: Our Temple is cleansed.

(HPS casts the Circle with athame
moving deosil around it.)

(With athame raised, Covener draws
invoking pentagram, starting from the
top; gives the salute and kisses
blade.)

East: "Lords of the Watchtower of the
East, Ladies of Air, we do invite, stir
and call you up, to witness our rites,
and to guard our Circle."

South: "Lords of the Watchtower of the
South, Ladies of Fire, we do invite,
stir and call you up, to witness our
rites, and to guard our Circle."

West: "Lords of the Watchtower of the
West, Ladies of Water, we do invite,
stir and call you up, to witness our
rites, and to guard our Circle."

North: "Lords of the Watchtower of the
North, Ladies of Earth, we do invite,
stir and call you up, to witness our
rites, and to guard our Circle."

(HP rings the bell three times.)

HP: "The Circle is cast. We are
between the worlds, beyond the bounds
of time, where night and day, birth and
death, joy and sorrow, meet as one."

HPS: "Now are we here and is the Temple
erected. Let none leave but with good
reason, till the Temple is cleared. So
mote it be."

THE TELLING OF A STORY OF THE SEASON

MAGICKAL WORKINGS

HPS: "Once more we meet together, one
with another, to share our joy of life
and to celebrate new beginnings."

HP: "The Lord and Lady have been good
to us. It is right that we thank them
for all that we have. They also know
that we have needs and they listen when
we call upon them."

HPS: "Then let us join together to
seek a blesing of the Goddess and the God
for the ventures, changes and new lives
that are started here tonight. And
let us also ask of them for that which we
feel we need; remembering always that
the gods help only those who help
themselves."

(Each person may mention one thing she
or he is beginning saying; "I
thank the Lord and Lady for........."
Other Coveners may then offer
assistance or ideas if possible.)

HPS: "The Lord and Lady have listened
and will answer in time. At home, place
a symbol of your transition under
your pillow and sleep with it for the
next week. You must also act in accord
by doing everything possible to bring
this change into being."

HP: "An it harm none, do what thou
wilt. Thus runs the Wiccan Rede.
Remember it well.  Whatever you desire;
whatever you would ask of the Gods;
whatever you would do; be assured that
it will harm no one - not even
yourself. And remember that as you
give, so it shall return threefold.
Give of yourself - your love - your
life - and you will be thrice rewarded.
But send forth harm and that too will
return thrice over."

(Music or Chanting might be done here)

HPS: "Beauty and Strength are in the
Lady and the Lord both. Patience and
Love; Wisdom and Knowledge."

CAKES AND ALE

(HP pours a small amount of wine for
everyone. All salute the Gods. The
bell is rung three times.)

HPS: "Now is the time for us to give
thanks to the Gods for all that
sustains us. May we ever be aware of
all that we owe the Gods."

(The HP places his athame in the HPS
goblet)

HP: "In like fashion may we join in
community for the happiness of each."

HPS: "Let the fruits of union promote
life. Let all be fruitful and let
wealth be spread throughout the lands."

(All drink)

(HP takes up plate of cakes. HPS
touches each with athame dish.)

HPS: "This food is the blessing of the
Gods to our bodies. Let us partake of
it freely. And as we share, let us
remember always to see to it that aught
that we have we share with those who
have nothing."

(All eat)

HP: "As we enjoy these gifts of the
Gods, let us remember that without the
Gods we would have nothing."

HPS: "Eat and drink and be happy.
Share and give thanks. So mote it be."

(Music might be played here)

CLEARING OF THE TEMPLE

HPS: "We came together in love and
friendship; let us part the same way.
Let us spread the love we have known in
this Circle outward to all; sharing it
with those we meet."

(All raise athames)

HP: "We thank the Lords of the
Watchtowers for guarding our Circle.

EAST: "Lords of the Watchtower of the
East, Ladies of Air, we do thank you
for attending our rites; and as you
depart, we bid you hail and farewell."

SOUTH: "Lords of the Watchtower of the
South, Ladies of Fire, we do thank you
for attending our rites; and as you
depart, we bid you hail and farewell."

WEST: "Lords of the Watchtower of the
West, Ladies of Water, we do thank you
for attending our rites; and as you
depart, we bid you hail and farewell."

NORTH: "Lords of the Watchtower of the
North, Ladies of Earth, we do thank you
for attending our rites; and as you
depart, we bid you hail and farewell."

HPS: "Lord and Lady, our thanks to you
for sharing this time together. Our
thanks for watching over us; guarding
and guiding us in all things.
Love is the Law and Love is the Bond."

"Merry meet, Merry part, and Merry Meet
again."

"The Temple is now cleared."

"So Mote it Be."

All: "So Mote it Be."
